I picked out a place in SoMa for breakfast. Unfortunately, the kitchen didn’t open till an hour after the doors opened. That was sort of annoying, so I went to another place down the street that turned out to be great: Soma Inn Café. I’ve actually been back twice since. I went all in (or is that all out?) and got the banana streusel–French toast topped with banana, 4-berry sauce, whipped cream, and powder cinnamon sugar–with a side of turkey sausage. What a treat!
For lunch, I went to the Grove, a local chain that overdoes it a bit in trying to create a homey atmosphere. Lots of wood and couches. Nevertheless, I had a very good Chinese chicken salad. (I’ve got to get something reasonably healthy now and then.)
The area west of Union Square (in other words, the Tenderloin) is known for its plethora of Asian cuisines. For dinner, I selected an Indian place, Chutney, in my ongoing attempt to acquire a taste for Indian food. The name of the place isn’t too adventurous, and neither was my choice of items from the menu. I got chicken boti (chicken cubes marinated in spices and cooked in clay oven) and an order of garlic naan (basically, Indian garlic bread). Afterwards, I wished I had gotten something a bit more interesting for my main course. But I got to say I ordered Indian food and enjoyed it enough.
After dinner I traveled to the Mission District to treat myself to an ice cream at Bi-Rite Creamery. Bi-Rite is notorious for long lines. To me, the place is overrated. No ice cream is so good that you should have to stand in line for well over a half hour. And Bi-Rite definitely isn’t. Don’t get me wrong, it’s good. I think I had cookies and cream, and it was just fine. But there are places at least as good nearby without the absurd wait.
