Puerto Rico is by far the largest (non-state) territory of the United States. I had no idea how big it was until the first time I flew over it. The main island is 2 1/2 times larger than New York’s Long Island. Its population is about the same as Connecticut’s. The metropolitan area including the capital, San Juan, has about the same size as the Pittsburgh area. So, yeah, it’s a pretty decent-sized non-state down there.
I passed through the San Juan airport many times on my work trips to the Caribbean. It was just once, in 1999, that I spent some time in San Juan. I had to evacuate Nevis due to an approaching hurricane, and I got stranded at the Ritz-Carlton for the better part of the week. The hurricane was a dud. The Ritz-Carlton was pretty nice. I got into the city and took a walk around Old San Juan. The 16th-century fort was impressive, and the old colonial buildings were startlingly colorful. A return trip for further investigation is definitely in order.
