I did not go hungry on Day 6. I even ordered 2 dinner entrees. (Not that I ate both of them. Well, not entirely.)
I had breakfast at the local branch of the storied California chain Mel’s Drive-In. I had a hearty breakfast, but boy was it shockingly expensive, even by San Francisco standards. I got the vegetarian omelet with broccoli, mushrooms, zucchini, yellow squash (which I’ve always called summer squash), and red & green peppers. It came with grilled potatoes (home fries, right?), and to make sure it was San Francisco style, I got it with sour dough bread. I added on a side of turkey sausage. How did that come to almost $40?
At some point during the day, I stopped off for a chocolate croissant and a berry juice somewhere. $14.25. Sheesh, San Francisco is expensive!
For lunch, a simple spinach, onion, and Swiss cheese quiche at a café at Fort Mason. (Even that was a little steep at $7.)
I had dinner at Balboa Cafe, a nice place in Cow Hollow. It only seemed right to start things off with a Balboa salad–mixed greens, seasonal produce, croutons, goat cheese, candied walnuts (well naturally, I asked for none of these), and sherry vinaigrette. Pleasant-looking, isn’t it?
For my 1st main course, I got diver scallops with red & white quinoa, charred corn, cherry tomatoes, red pepper cream sauce, and micro basil. I normally wouldn’t order diver scallops because they tend to be large and I prefer small bay scallops. But the presentation sounded so good, I couldn’t resist. I mean, doesn’t that look mouth-watering?
Just one problem. The diver scallops weren’t at all fresh. It’s never good when your seafood smells like Ajax. Hence my 2nd main course.
The manager was very gracious and made sure my replacement dinner came very quickly. Thanks to the excellent service and the delicious replacement main course, the overall dinner experience was very positive. I didn’t even care what it cost. And what did I replace my fishy scallops with? A very yummy seafood pasta dish. I wish I could dig into that right now!
From Balboa Cafe, it was a short walk to Over the Moon Creamery, where I got a cone of oreo swirl. You can’t go wrong with that!
