The Philippines is probably the foreign country where I spent the most time when I was in the Navy. I’ll never forget a raucous 4-hour taxi ride I had from Manila to Olangapo–former home of the largest US Navy base in the Pacific. At first I was frightened by the nearly suicidal driving techniques of the locals. Over the course of the 4 hours, I grew confident I wasn’t going to die en route, and I could only laugh at each near-collision. I really liked the food in the Philippines. I had a memorably delicious meal at the Ambassador Hotel during the one night I stayed in Manila. I couldn’t even identify the vegetables on the plate, but I devoured them. God willing, like Douglas MacArthur, I shall return.
