The last sightseeing stop on my trip to India was a disappointment. Unfortunately, my last day of Indian cuisine was disappointing too. Way to end my trip on a down note!
For lunch, I went to a concession at a train station. I know, you’re going to say, “Well what do you expect, getting lunch at a train station?” The place actually had an extensive menu. For starters, I had a lassi, the last yogurt shake of my trip. Couldn’t go wrong there. For the meal, I got a grilled chicken sandwich. When will I ever learn that I can’t order sandwiches overseas? I’m way too picky an eater and they always come with stuff I don’t like in them. (Usually something mayonnaise-y.) I couldn’t really eat what I got, so I ordered some jeera rice. It was a plain dish of rice with cumin seeds. Nothing too special, but I ate it down.
I had dinner that night at Connaught Place. It was a very casual spot. One thing that caught my eye was the female busboy. When I had checked out of my hotel that morning, I was surprised to see that the desk agent was a woman. These were the only 2 women I saw working in the service field my entire 13 days in India.
The first dish I got with dinner was an onion masala dosa. It was enormous. I really had no idea how to eat it! It tasted okay. I don’t think I had the whole thing. Of course it came with all those sauces on the side that I usually don’t touch, other than maybe to see what they taste like.
The other dish I had was an order of onion vada. (Yes, lots of onion for dinner.) Vada is like a savory donut. Again, they were okay.
I had to go back to the hotel to pick up my bag. This was my chance to get something I knew would hit the spot!
Chocolate and mango ice cream save the day!
Well, that’s it for my adventure in Indian cuisine. Just like the disappointing end to my sightseeing didn’t change the fact that I saw so many wondrous sights over my trip, the not-quite satisfying meals on my last day didn’t mean that I hadn’t enjoyed so many delicious dishes over the previous 12 days. Now if only could remember that unforgettable dinner from Day 12 that I forgot!
I haven’t had Indian cuisine since I got back from my trip almost 3 1/2 years. Soon after I got back, I went to dinner with friends and Indian food was suggested. I was really ready to take a break from Indian cuisine at that point. But I really should try it again sometime soon. Especially now that I know what I like!
