San Francisco has a reputation as a great food city. But it’s not like I’m going out for gourmet meals every night. And like any place, eating out can be a hit-or-miss proposition. I can definitely say that I had a good mix of eating over the 2016 sightseeing season in San Francisco.
I started off with a very filling breakfast. Sears Fine Food is a Union Square institution. Their most famous dish is their Swedish pancakes. It may look like they are 6 of them in the picture, but those are stacks of 3 each. 18 pancakes. Filling. Of course, I got them with lingonberries. A side of chicken apple sausage? Why not! I was stuffed. Not a bad way to start off the season.
According to plan, I grabbed a slice of pizza in North Beach for lunch. It wasn’t the greatest. Also according to plan, I got some ice cream at a place called Delise Dessert Café. Chocolate fudge brownie. I knew right away, even on Day 1, that it wasn’t going to be in the running for San Francisco’s best ice cream.
Fisherman’s Wharf has a bad reputation among San Franciscans, and even among some tourists. But there are some worthwhile attractions to see there. One of them, of course, is getting some fried seafood. After seeing some of the local sights, I was ahead of schedule and a little hungry. The smell of fried food was tempting me. So I got some fried calamari and fries at the Chowder Hut on Fisherman’s Wharf Really, how can you go wrong!
It wasn’t enough to just have second lunch. At Ghiradelli Square I had second ice cream. Yes, I had my second ice cream at the day. I just had plain vanilla ice cream. No hot fudge made with famous Ghiradelli chocolate. I wasn’t expecting much. But it was so good. Definitely more satisfying than the ice cream I had had earlier.
I had dinner at the excellent Nob Hill Cafe, a charming little place near the peak of the hill. I started off with a mixed salad. Very tasty with a tangy dressing. For the main course, I got fusilli zinzero, one of the specials of the day. It was fusilli prepared with watercress, radicchio, rock shrimp, and bay scallops in a creamy ginger sauce. Sounds good, right? Well, I didn’t love it. But there was nothing wrong with it. I think the radicchio may have been too bitter for me. I would still say the dinner was excellent. The problem was with me, not with the food!
I finished up the day’s delectables with a beverage at the legendary Top of the Mark. Of course getting a beverage there is just an excuse for taking in the views. For fun, I had a PG Sunet–fresh orange juice, pineapple juice, and grenadine.
Cheers!
